Is it ethical for Multinational Corporations to set up establishments or production factories in foreign countries to take advantage of the use of child labor? Currently child labor is one of the most controversial human rights issues that needs to be addressed. This issued can be addressed beginning with the root issue of Multinational corporations (MNCs). This is a serious issue that should be recognized nationally because of serious ethical concerns. Its estimated that about 168 million children work in the labor force. Not only do they work extended hours, but an estimated 85 million of these children work in hazardous conditions in agriculture, domestic labor, mining, Tabaco farms, and other sectors. (Hrw.org). But it is an issue considering 59 million children are considered to be doing hazardous work. What are specific Multinational corporations in the world that use child labor? There are 2 main themes within Hamlet the Hunger Games. These being the idea that they are both being watched and therefore having to be insecure about themselves and what they say. The other is the theme of fatherhood and loss. Shakespeare’s feelings are very much portrayed throughout the whole of Hamlet, he gives the impression he is slightly bi-polar as his mood contrast so much. His feelings reflect on Hamlets behaviour. This led to Hamlet being one of the greatest dramatic characters ever created, he switches from reckless to cautious, courteous yet uncivil and loving yet violent and malicious. Hamlet is full of faults which reflect on his feelings, he puts himself down and rejects himself, and he rejects his head telling him what to do and instead goes with his heart. Because Hamlet is so innocent his heart does not want to kill any human being, yet he knows he has to, to respect his father. This is probably the cause of Hamlets madness, the feeling of having so many options yet so many different reasons and feelings. We can compare this to Katniss and everyone else living under the rule of the Capitol. Collins uses Katniss as an example of the way they are threatened to keep their thoughts to themselves. As a young girl, exploring the world as most people do she was forced to suppress her thought for the fear of the consequences that would lead beyond that. As Katniss grew up she began to realise for herself what it would mean if she did blurt out any feelings, knowing the consequences would be fatal she decided to keep them all to her herself aside from the fact she had so many feelings to share. ‘So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no-one could ever read my thoughts’ In this quote, Katniss shows she has had to hide any feelings at all, part of the reason is that she is protecting Prim. Her love for Prim is so big that she wants to set the best example she can for her. She realises anything she says Prim could easily pick up on and repeat. This is also extended as any comment mistakenly said can be fatal to her family, Gale and even the whole of District 12. The comment of the indifferent masks relate to the capitol as they all put a mask on to hide the fact that what they are doing is wrong yet they still choose to do it. All of these point relates to Hamlet, and the way he is being watched, this is especially portrayed well in the making of Hamlet played by David Tenant. In his version we get parts of the play in the position of the CCTV cameras recording certain scenes in the play. For both of the main characters in our stories their relationships and the way they relate to specific characters is so similar. For Katniss it’s Rue and for Hamlet is it his deceased father. Katniss has many feelings towards Rue and especially her death, as the audience realise that her relationship with Rue is so important to her. Katniss does not let Rue see her feelings for her as she treats Rue like Prim and doesn’t want to expose Rue and break her innocence. Coming into the arena already had exposed Rue to adulthood and unnecessary scenes that she shouldn’t be witnessing at her age. Amongst the feelings of anger and hate as Rue dies, Katniss finds strength and freedom. ‘It’s the capitol I hate, for doing this to all of us. ’ This is the first real time that Katniss openly talks about her feelings towards the capitol. Because Rue’s death is so close to her heart, it makes Katniss more aware of her feelings, she becomes less selfish, and only wants to do what other people would benefit from rather than her. ‘Sing. But if this is Prim’s, I mean, Rue’s last request, I have to at least try. Here, Rue has asked Katniss to sing as she is dying, Katniss’s reaction to this at first is a little held back, she uses excuses but a moment of realisation changes her thoughts. Singing was something she did with her dad. As the familiar memories came back, she decided to do it as it was Rue’s last request of Katniss and she wanted to respect Rue in that way, by doing something she did with someone so important to her. I can imagine, Katniss felt very surprised, a last request was to sing, and this was probably a shocking request, especially in the circumstances and the overall atmosphere of the arena. Despite Katniss’s excuses she decided to sing on Rue’s last gasps of breathe. Katniss was so loyal to Rue, even though Katniss didn’t know Rue’s background. She could have been from one of the wealthiest families in district 12. But Katniss still treated her with the highest of respect. This may be because Rue is just like Prim in the eyes of Katniss. In the introduction the theme of fatherhood was mentioned, this is a major theme throughout both of the stories, for Katniss the relationship she had with her father was so important that her whole world fell down when he was killed. Hamlets story is so similar to Katniss’s. Shakespeare presents Hamlet’s thoughts and feelings through him being overwhelmed as his father’s ghost leaves. Throughout the speech Hamlet is thinking over what his father has just told him. Shakespeare has him repeating the lines the ghost said as he left, ‘Remember Thee. ’ This shows he is shocked that that he’s said and wants this phrase to be prominent throughout the time. Hamlet wants to make sure that what he has heard is acted upon and that he stays true to his father’s word. I think Shakespeare wanted to show that Hamlet did not like him saying remember me to him because he felt like he was remembering him but his father was not noticing that. He needed to fulfil his own needs by showing his father that he was not forgetting him. I think Shakespeare wanted him to swear to kill his uncle because Hamlet noticed that his Uncle was having an effect on him let alone he just found out that he had killed his father. All of this is also reflected in the same speech as Hamlet says ‘from the table of my memory I’ll wipe away all trivial fond records. ’ Here he is exploring the idea that he needs to clear his head of all the memories of silly things that are not needed in order for him to be able to fully remember his father. This may be showing that Hamlet is doubting what he’s just heard and wanted to clear his mind to make sure he is fully focussing, hearing and responding to his father. In the Hunger Games this theme runs and is similar to Katniss’s mother and her feelings after Katniss’s father died. The links between Katniss’ father’s death and the affect that it has on her mother are strong, she obviously felt like there wasn’t any point in living and Katniss was acting as her fortress. ‘No. You cant. Not like when dad died. Youre all she has. No matter what you feel, you be there for her, you understand. Dont cry. Dont cry. ’ Katniss had to step up and take over the mother role for Rue when their father died as their mother was not in a state able to help them both, this is hindsight probably helped Katniss a lot. It gave her the courage, skills and authority/power to help her survive in the arena. Being independent and responsible at such a young age made her lose her self-identity, she wasn’t wasn’t able to grow and develop as a normal young lady, let alone the rules and pressure of the capitol. Katniss’s father’s death brought up a lot of trust issues, she believed she could trust her mother to look after her but how could she now, and how could she ever trust anyone from then on. All she’s lived with so far is people who have left her or not been stable themselves. I believe that Katniss’s mother froze after their loss is because she didn’t want to face the reality and allow the capitol to wipe all of the memories of their father. The capitols power is similar to the power that Hamlets Uncle has over him, to rule and take over every part of him. Katniss’s mother didn’t want to allow this power to overcome her. The inspiration and background of both stories is shown throughout each story. Collins inspiration was from channel surfing, she noticed a channel with children competing on a reality show and then children fighting in an actual war, as the thought more about these the lines started to blur into what is now the Hunger Games. The events of Katniss’s father reflect Collin’s life, when she was younger her own father died. For her the news items and programmes about the Iraq war were distressing just like when the districts have to watch footage of arena. Another inspiration she tells us about is the Greek myth Theseus the Minotaur. In this myth, there are 2 opposing sides, Crete and Athens. Crete believe they are stronger and have the most power so they take Athens best youngest boys and girls (7 of each) so that they don’t have to go to war with them. The Renaissance The Renaissance The renaissance first appeared in the Italian city states because of the similarity between their language and the Latin language. Humanism used classical works to improve speaking and writing skills; therefor the Italians had a great advantage. More manuscripts were made available for the Italians, which led to the production of more intellectual leaders. The writing and speaking skills of humanism was soon demanded at the princely courts. Humanism transformed art, literature and political and social values. Eastern scholars were invited by the Italians to join the West, to bring more Greek manuscripts and to help regain command of the Greek language. The Italian states differed from other states in that they were the leaders of the renaissance, with the chancellor of Florence, Coluccio Salutati, and a group of humanists Italy collected the ancient manuscripts. They were called the civic humanists, since they felt that an active life was essential for full development. Two scholars from Italy, Guarino de Verona and Vittorino de Feltre transformed education. They used the ideas of humanism to establish a curriculum that spread to Europe. The Florentine Neoplatonists led the way towards a new exploration of grand ideals of truth and perfection. Ficino and Pico were both gifted Neoplatonists, and with their philosophy they had a major influence on artists and thinkers for the next two centuries. The Italian humanism left a deep imprint on European thought and education. The Italian city states stimulated the development of the Renaissance, since the movement first took place in Florence. Another advantage was that Florence was famous for its art, since the greatest artists of the 1200s and 1300s, Giotto and Cimabue, were identified with the city. In my exploration of the play I will be referring to those which involve Olga, the character I represented in our first scene study. The main themes of Three Sisters include frustration, eviction, and the idea of family. The sisters are frustrated at not being able to go back to their hometown, Moscow. This is something they have dreamed about for a long time. Olga says in Act One, Oh God, I woke up this morning... I saw the spring, and I felt such a great surge of joy, such a passionate longing for home [Moscow]. This is the central plot of the play, but of course each of the characters has their own frustrations. Olga is frustrated at her career. She has been given the position of headmistress at a school, a job she did not willingly take. Olga also has to deal with many of her siblings problems, since their mother passed away and Olga became the mother figure of the family. In our scene (Act Three, lines 322-439), Olga enters on Irinas line, Throw me away, throw me away, I cant go on...! She comforts and counsels her on the subject of marriage and a womans duty in life. Masha awakens, and Olga promptly expresses her discomfort for Mashas affair with Vershinin, clearly showing her disappoi ntment in her younger sisters decisions. In addition to her sisters problems, she also deals with her frustrations over not getting married. This makes it emotionally difficult to help Irina with her romantic situation, and even more difficult to listen to Masha speak of love. Sounds good, right? They aren’t my words though: we lifted them from Allan Ahlberg’s Cops and Robbers, then made a couple of tweaks. These days, pinching stuff from the internet is all the rage, simply because it’s (a) incredibly easy and (b) a short-cut to mountains of free web content. Obviously, plagiarism is unethical. We all know that text or images taken from another source should be properly attributed, in a footnote or through ‘quote marks’. But ethics aside, plagiarism is simply bad business. Ello ello, whats going on here? Let’s say that you copy and paste a chunk of text from a website into your own report, press release or company brochure. It may look good. It may read well. But the basic fact is, people will notice. Stolen goods – in writing just as at a car-boot sale – stand out. If they find your content via a search engine, they’ll immediately see that yours is not the only site to carry the text in question. If they’re editors and run plagiarism software (such as Turnitin or iThenticate), they’ll quickly see through your sleight-of-mouse. Most importantly, copied text stands out to anyone who pays enough attention to your writing (and if people aren’t paying enough attention to your writing, you’ve got a whole other problem). Changes in tone, style, vocabulary and voice register with readers, even if they don’t realise it. It makes for a bumpy ride. It makes the reader less comfortable with your content. And it makes them less likely either to sympathise with you or believe you (or ‘you’). OK, so you think again, and go to what we might call ‘level 2’ plagiarism. You rip off, but you re-write.
